Okay, I admit it. I'm a “design geek.”

While I no longer perform the work on a day-to-day basis, my background is in design. I have contributed to the design of cell phones, machines, and other electro-mechanical devices.

However, I have never been above admitting that 3D computer-aided design tools made me a better, more efficient designer. Because of this, I am happy to now work at a company that allows me to help others become better, more efficient SOLIDWORKS designers and users. It also gives me the opportunity to meet many interesting, creative people. I have walked a mile in their shoes, I genuinely enjoy helping our customers achieve the same productivity benefits as I did.

On this blog and on the SOLIDWORKS Tech Blog, I’ve shared years of productivity-enhancing tips and tricks. However, lately it dawns on me that there is more to design than software, and designers have passions rooted in other interests and experiences. Ultimately, innovation originates from inspiration. So, a few of my recent posts (1, 2, 3) have dealt with precisely that.

At the risk of sounding cliché, I believe today’s designers stand on the shoulders of the giants who came before. (Here’s a fun fact: that expression can be attributed all the way back to the 12th century, although perhaps its most famous variation is Isaac Newton’s 1675 pronouncement, "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.")

With that in mind, I’ve put together a sampling of my favorite quotes on design, innovation, and the tools designers use.
